Happy New Year to you all from the committee!

February 9, 2011

After a successful fundraising year last year, plans are already afoot for 2011. Dates are still being finalised for some events, but the first date for your diary is:

Saturday 12th Feb 3 – 5 pm BEETLE DRIVE. When was the last time you played ‘Beetle’? All ages welcome – please see separate ad for details.

Other events include a wine tasting and a Pampering evening, with dates to fit with other groups’ potential events (such as G&S and Kate Woolf evenings).

The next Bag2School Collections for 2nd hand clothes, bedding, shoes etc are on 31 March and 6 October, keenly awaited by many already!

The AGM is on Monday 7th February at 8pm in the School Hall. Please come to hear reports of the S&VA’s and School’s activities for the year – a last chance to hear from Miss Dorrell at our meetings before her maternity leave, and enjoy a glass of something afterwards. New joiners to the committee are most welcome for the elections – please contact me if you are interested.

The next termly gathering is on Thursday 24 March at 8pm at the School where the 2011 budget will be set and plans for the year ahead outlined. The school has a number of projects in mind and parents will hopefully be keen to participate in fundraising ventures.

Feast Week planning will also begin shortly, as you can see from Lorna’s letter – volunteers please contact Lorna Carter!

Many thanks for your continuing support of the school and village!

Minutes of the AGM 25 Feb 2010

March 16, 2010

Minutes of the School &Village Association AGM held on Thursday 25 February 20010

1. Present: Fleur Clegg, Neil Harris, Rob Howard, Roger Swain, Lois Clark, Georgina Mason, Kate Dorrell, Lorna Carter, Alison Arnold, Bill & Sandra Martin, John & Anne Kingsmill-Scholes, David & Maud Wyatt, Claire Willis, Huguette Jenkinson, Tony & Sylvia Pryer, Rosemary Gardiner, Anne Deane

 2. Apologies: Phil Clegg, Howard Russell, Phillip Stephenson, Jenny Hack, Diane Harris, Mara Ramans, Janet Watson

3. and 4. Previous minutes: The only matters arising were the need to publicise the arrangement for giving lifts which could be coupled with a website for car sharing by S Cambs DC. The minutes were accepted.

5. Head Teacher’s report: The Chairman introduced Kate Dorrell who was welcomed and congratulated on her post being made permanent. She reported on the previous year (although she has only been in post since September) with a written report under the following headings: Theatre visit, Artist in residence, Maths challenge, Healthy schools award, Kingswood residential, Staff changeover, Safeguarding regulations, Zambian visitors, Trips and other visitors, Children in need day, The Sleepy Shepherd, Chinese New Year and the Library. World Book Day is on 4 March with a fair at the school 3.15 – 3.45 and parents and villagers are invited to attend. On NH’s suggestion Miss Dorrell agreed that facilitating the village’s ability to sponsor children for this day would be a good idea (rather than the children just going door-to-door) and suggested herself/the office as a contact. Miss Dorrell thanked the S&VA and the village for such a warm welcome and expressed how fortunate the school is to have such a supportive community, as well as church and diocese. She was very keen to encourage parents to continue to get involved in the S&VA.

6. Chairman’s report: Fleur Clegg thanked everyone for coming and reported on the S&VA’s activities and overall financial position for a very busy and successful 2009. She thanked all those who had contributed to the S&VA’s activities last year and stressed how important it was to recruit some new volunteers so that the same people were not always called upon. Plans and expenditure for 2010 include a variety of possible events and special projects which may arise in the school/village with more detail to be discussed in the forthcoming Termly Meeting to which everyone is invited at the school on Monday March 22.  Fleur thanked the members of the committee, particularly those standing down and Rob Howard for his long and valuable service as secretary (which NH re-iterated having been instrumental in Rob’s original joining). Her report will be presented again in a future newsletter. She was asked how information about the activities in the school could be sent to those without children there and the meeting discussed this, with Miss Dorrell agreeing to look at how events could be publicised in time more widely. The newsletter is one route, but signs help and Claire Willis offered to post information towards the far end of Oakington Road, where it was again felt that a noticeboard would be useful.

7. Annual accounts: Roger Swain presented the audited accounts for 2009. He expressed his thanks to Howard Russell for auditing and for agreeing to act for the coming year. Income was at £6957 and net expenditure £4254 producing a surplus of £2703. This was largely due to Feast Week and Marquee hire, as well as Bags2School, the revue and Christmas events, and the fact that advertising in the newsletter now showed a surplus rather than a loss and Roger thanked Fleur for her efforts in this regard. This increases the reserves to £7932 which are provisionally allocated to marquee replacement, Village Plan/LO building fund and general reserves. Acceptance was proposed by David Wyatt, seconded by Sandra Martin and passed. Roger also thanked the Chairman for all her work for the S&VA.

8. Appointment of auditor: Howard Russell was reappointed, proposed by David Wyatt, seconded by Anne Deane.

9. Resignation of current committee and election of new officers and committee: David Wyatt chaired this part of the proceedings and said that there were vacancies on the committee due to the resignation of Phillip Stephenson and Lois Clark. As a number of the committee were willing to stand if no other nominations were received, the following were elected: Fleur Clegg, chairman (for a final year); Georgina Mason, secretary; Roger Swain, treasurer; Neil Harris, publicity officer; and as committee members, Rob Howard and Jenny Hack. There were no other nominations. The committee was re-elected en bloc proposed by Tony Pryer and seconded by Anne Deane.

10. Future events: These had already been mentioned by the Chairman. Lorna Carter was concerned about parents leaving their children at rehearsals for the revues and the need for CRB checks and asked if the S&VA would fund checks for the organisers (thought to be about £65 each). It was agreed that this matter needed looking into more generally and Miss Dorrell offered to report back to the Committee on the requirements so that this could be taken further (it was noted that the process was thought to be changing in July). Sandra Martin thanked S&VA for holding funds for the Green Group and mentioned that there was a proposal from S Cambs to provide guidance on organising a village litter pick with a workshop on March 8, if this was of interest. It was felt that some individuals already did this for some areas of the village so that a community day might be unnecessary and it was left to Sandra to contact the relevant individuals to discuss it further.

The meeting was closed and refreshments enjoyed.               Rob Howard, Secretary

March 2010 Report on Activities

March 6, 2010

January saw the Clothes Swap kindly organised by Lorraine Lorimer and team – a great opportunity to revamp and recycle at the same time and the kids in particular really enjoyed the chance to ‘shop’. Do come along to the next one – if only to see what it’s like and enjoy tea and cake!

February has been a relatively quiet month for the S&VA apart from the AGM due at the end of the month.

Feast Week planning has kicked off, so keep an eye out for announcements and requests for volunteers (Monday, June 28th – Saturday July 3rd) . Various suggestions have been made for events over the coming year, ranging from a ‘talent night’ (so dust off your X-factor winning routine just in case), a camping night, a casino night and a barn dance or party. All thoughts and organisational help welcome.

We are also looking into creating an S&VA cook book with tried and tested favourite recipes, the simpler the better, so do think what your signature dish is – be it scones, pudding or curry!

The 2010 Bag2School 2nd hand clothing collection dates are Thursdays 29 April and October 14th.

The next termly meeting will be on Monday, 22 March at 8pm at the school – all school parents and village residents welcome.

Fleur Clegg (Chair)

December Report

December 12, 2009

Congratulations to Mara, Janet and Lorna for a wonderfully entertaining revue – The Roaring Noughties was a sell out both nights and the perfect antidote to a wet and dismal November (see below and back page). Many thanks on behalf of the S&VA to the directors, to Lambros whose piano skills we are so lucky to enjoy, and to all the performers, backstage and front of house team and all those who provided delicious puddings, donated raffle prizes and contributed in other ways to making this such a success.

Look out for tickets for the S&VA Christmas Draw – please see the main feature for more detail.  Many thanks to those who kindly donated prizes – do see what our advertisers can offer by way of Christmas presents and seasonal items. The draw will take place on Sunday December 13th at 4.15pm at The Black Horse. Please bring your families for a Christmas drink and hear the results!

2010 Events - January 30th’s Clothes Swap is a fun new event to kick the year off and the Bag2School collection dates are Thursdays 29 April and October 14th. Feast Week will be the week of Monday, June 28th – Saturday July 3rd.

The next meeting date is the AGM on February 25th 8pm at the School.  All are welcome – especially newcomers – to hear reports on the S&VA’s year, the Headteacher’s report and to appoint the Committee (volunteers please!) – followed by drinks.

Advance Notice: access to the photocopier and other school facilities by village groups during school hours will change – this is due to regulations on safeguarding children with which the school must comply. Rob Howard will have more information when details are finalised.

Finally, as another S&VA year draws to a close, may I thank my committee and everyone who has supported the S&VA this year. The support from village residents and groups, school parents, staff and pupils and beyond is what keeps Dry Drayton’s community spirit so alive and makes the wide variety of events so successful. Particular thanks to our newsletter team – our editor, Sylvia, who has done a valiant job in compiling village items and interesting new features, Ian and Lorraine for co-ordinating the newsletter rounds and our team of newsletter deliverers who have kept us all up-to-date in 2009 and kindly taken on the distribution of some additional items of village interest this year, not least the Village Plan.

 Fleur Clegg

Note on Distribution – Just a reminder that if you do have an item of village interest to distribute, please keep an eye on the submission deadline so that it can be printed in the newsletter itself. If this is not possible and your group is not able to distribute it itself via its members, it may be that the newsletter deliverers will be willing to help as part of their usual round. This is entirely up to them, however, as additional items weigh and add on time, so any request should be made to them direct (Ian/Lorraine Lorimer have the list).

We are also trying to create a team of “Additional Deliverers” to help out with some deliveries, so if you are willing to help out with an occasional “additional delivery” (particularly around longer routes such as the High St or Pettitts Lane) or on a more regular basis, please do contact me (789780; fleur.clegg@allenovery.com) or Ian/Lorraine (782546).

Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year from the S&VA committee!

November Report

November 4, 2009

The termly meeting was held on Monday October 12th at School and we were very pleased to introduce Kate Dorrell, the new headteacher, who spoke about plans and new ventures for the school and pupils. Business included reporting on previous and proposed activities for 2009 and Roger talked through the accounts which showed that the S&VA has so far enjoyed a healthy fundraising year ahead of budget (thanks in no small part to the wonderful Feast Week). Nick Irish gave an update on action following the finalised village plan which should be dropping through our doors soon and Rob read out a lovely letter from Margaret Prosser thanking the S&VA for her retirement gifts and for its support during her time at the School. Along with friends and former colleagues, this month we also welcomed Margaret back to the village for a very enjoyable retirement celebration at The Black Horse, at which we also welcomed the School’s two Zambian Partnership school visitors.

The next meeting date is the AGM on February 25th, 8pm at the School. All are welcome – especially newcomers – to hear reports on the S&VA’s year, the Headteacher’s report and to appoint the Committee (volunteers please!) followed by drinks.

The Bag2School collection on October 15th at the school and village hall brought out a 780 kg pile of unwanted second-hand clothes and other items, raising a wonderful £312. Many thanks to all those who contributed – hopefully you are enjoying the new-found space in your wardrobes! Dates for 2010 collections are Thursdays 29 April and October 14th.

The Roaring Noughties revue on 20 and 21 November promises great entertainment – get your tickets early! Look out for tickets for the S&VA Christmas Raffle – to go on sale late November/early December with the draw in December (date TBC).

Save the date also for the S&VA Christmas Shopping Night on 3rd December at the School – enjoy mulled wine and a chance to stock up locally on Christmas presents from lots of great stalls. Any local residents who would like to have a stall (or need transport) please contact Georgina Mason on 07786 272406 or Fleur Clegg (789780).
