February has seen the S&VA year really kick off. The AGM took place on February 7th. Kate Dorrell updated us on the school’s plans and also asked for village understanding in keeping off the school field temporarily while it is in such a dire state, in order to ensure it is fit for use by all once the weather improves. Footballers please note!
The Chairman’s report summarised the year’s events and successful fundraising activities, thanking all those involved, including our editor and newsletter team. The Treasurer reported on the healthy state of finances and the meeting thanked Howard Russell for once again auditing the annual accounts and agreeing to do so next year. A new committee was elected – Roger Swain (Treasurer), Scottie Hawkes (Secretary), Fiona McLeman (Publicity Officer), Fleur Clegg, Lorna Carter, Neil Harris and Chris Mills. As flagged at last year’s AGM, I have stepped down after 4 years as Chair and the role is currently vacant.
The next termly meeting is on Thurs 24 March 8pm at the School where the 2011 budget will be set and plans for the year ahead outlined. The school has a number of projects in mind and parents will hopefully be keen to participate in fundraising ventures.
Our first event this year also took place – the Beetle Drive. Players of all ages (the age range spanning some number of decades!) enjoyed the friendly competition to see who could draw their complete beetle first. The dice throwing started gently and grew increasingly fast and furious as the realisation dawned that the faster the throwing the greater the chance of winning! Tea and cakes provided a welcome interval before the second round – many thanks to all the bakers and prize donors and particularly to Lorna, Pat and Gill for helping host. Although this was not intended as a specific fundraiser, we were delighted to raise over £100 towards school playground equipment. We hope to repeat this event next year, not least as it is such a fun way to get old and young together.
Other events afoot include a wine tasting possibly in May and a Pampering evening on April 2nd in time for Mothering Sunday. We are also involved in a village Royal Wedding Party on Friday, April 29th.
Feast Week planning is also well underway – start planning your costumes! Volunteers please contact Lorna Carter (780649). The next Bag2School Collection for 2nd hand clothes, bedding, shoes etc is on 31 March. Further details of many of these should appear elsewhere in this issue.
Many thanks for your support during my chairmanship and here’s to an exciting 2011 under the stewardship of the new committee!
Fleur Clegg
